RELIGIOUS LEADERS IN JUDAISM

In the past worship was centered around the temple in Jerusalem. At that time it was the priests who were the religious leaders. After the temple was destroyed by the

Romans, the Jews were scattered throughout different nations. The synagogue became their centers of worship. In the synagogue, Rabbis provided spiritual leadership to the Jews. The role of a Rabbi is mainly to teach.

RABBI
Each synagogue elects its own Rabbi. In the traditional synagogues, only men are allowed to be Rabbis. In reform and liberal synagogues, women are allowed to have this post. A Rabbi is responsible for teaching the Torah, giving guidance, and carrying out ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.

CANTOR
A cantor is a person who leads worship in
the synagogue. They lead the congregation
in prayer and singing.
